brown smoke

the look: i was in the mood for a smoky-eye, but since i am wearing black (a very rare occasion), and i didn’t want it to go in the gothic direction, i used tones of brown (instead of grey and black). it is (in hinesight) also kinda channeling keira knightley (who usually does a brown smokey-eye. and, oh it looks gooood......). probably, subconsciously triggered by my new hairdo.

skin: foundation and powder for even and matt skin. on the apples of my cheeks i used my go-to loose powder blush.

brows: strong brows (also subconsciously channeling keira, i guess), by using dark brown eyeshadow and a brow brush.

eyes: i started out with a matt light brown on my lower and upper lid, generously blending up to my orbital bone. with a matt medium brown, i defined the outer corner in a sideways v shape. then i used a taupey, sparkly eyeliner to draw a line (not too thin) along the upper lashes, dragged it out a bit from the outer corner, and half way along my bottom lid. the top waterline also got a coating of brown eye liner, before elongating my lashes with mascara. 

lips: i wanted color on my lips without doing a perfect-lipstick look, so i used the revlon, lipstain + blam in forbidden. i have been using this color a looot, lately. i love it because it is suuuper easy and suuuuuper cool. (i can’t quite decide if i like this tone with my new hair color though.....)

perfect is boring anyway.....

the look: disregarding what is would be considered "perfect". but rather, leaving the eye brows untamed looking... using too much mascara and blush... and giving the lips a pink fade-out

skin: i prepped my skin with mac, prep + prime, skin base. it has a very subtle shimmer, so it leaves the skin looking naturally glowing. even though this look is about imperfection...... i applied some concealer. then i dusted face powder around my nose, and under my eyes. for the apples of my cheeks i used... aaalmos too much... bright pink pigment.

brows: my brows are very hard to tame... so they were very happy with this look... they could just do their thaaang. i did enhanced their booshyness by brushing them up, with a good amount of brow gel, and filling them in with light brown powder, using a brow brush.

eyes: i matted the entire area with a very light eye shadow, almost all the way up to my brows. i rimed
my eyes all around with a dull bronze-colored eye liner. i didn't worry about the line being very delicate or even. using a q-tip i, afterward defused the line into the matt shadow. the eye lashes got that almost-too-clumpy look with a gooood amount of mascara and making sure to get all those little hairs in the corners.

lips: the lips got a good coating of lip conditioner and then a sweep of bright pink matt lipstick, at the centre. with my fingers i blended the two layers together.

so here we are... two saturdays ago (sorry i have been kind of behind on my posts)... at mcmonagle hair  in munich, germany. this look happened, more or less spontanious... anne-marie (mcmonagle) took all my hair with one hand and cut it off. i said: “cool!”. then she took it again in a highter ponytail and cut (to not say chopped) it off, again. i said: “cooool!!”. she snipped at it a couple more times, while ensuring her next customer (that was watching with a dropped jaw) that she actually caaan cut hair. then we decided to retouch my roots and add some copper here-and-there. it ended up being a david-bowie-(ca. 1973)-meets-keira-knightley-(in elle, april 2005)-kinda-thaaang.

let me just say that i think lady gaga's new look is just fantastic!

of course, where else was she going to go? she couldn't possibly put more crazy make-up... masks... wigs... or costumes on. the covers of first harpers bazaar and now elle really grab me, as i pass the news paper stands... she looks so beautifully vulnerable. 

this fall inspiration feels much newer (to me) than the doing the 90s-thing.

time for a change. i am one of those girls that changes her hair a looot. i just get bored. i love drastic changes. hair is such a major part of your appearance and changing it usually triggers an entirely new look (at least for me...)

inspiration: ranya mordanova and any other model, who rocked the bleached-brows look back then... and frankly, pulled it off sooo much better than me..... and even though, i see now ...lets be honest... knew back then, that it reeeally didn't look good, ever since i saw rooney mara as lisbeth salander (my absolute favorite bad-ass), and (just now) the girls at alexander mcqueen, spring 14, i am aaaalmost tempted to do it again...... can i get a "fashion-victim"!?

benefit(ing) (like that play on words?)

i stayed at my sisters (the best sister in aaaall of the lands, by the way) one night, while i was in munich. i did not have any of my make-up with me, for the next day..... i hate not having my own make-up, but it is a good opportunity to try different products. i tried some of her benefit products. Honestly, I am was not a big benefit-fan.... but i really liked these little guys..... and i think i will have to purchase them. 

skin: some kind-a gorgeous, a concealer that i applied (with my fingers) under my (jetlag) eyes and other little imperfections..... it feels really good (and i am not just saying that because it tells me that on the lid...) because it is creamy at first, but turns into powder when applying it and really melts into your skin. a really good alternative if you don’t want / need to do the full foundation-concealer-and-powder thing. 

brows: i usually fill my brows with eye shadow, and a brow brush, for a strong-very-defined look. for a natural-but-groomed brow, gimme brow (a tinted brow gel) is a good option. (I didn’t really like this color on me though....)

eyes: i regretted not having myyy mascara with me..... i just need my long eye-batting lashes. (and as you can see they need a specific mascara, to bring out the "are-those-real?" look.....) 

lips: i already own bene tint (the one that also comes with clear gloss, pocket pal), but i diiid discover it the first time, at my sister's. the applicator (imagine a nail polish brush... kinda scary at first), makes it easy to apply. depending on how many layers you apply, it can be a very light tint, or a darker still-natural-lip-color reddish (like i did in my up in the air look). i also used it on the apples of my cheeks. i usually don’t like using stains on my cheeks, because they are not quite as easy to apply (as a powder with a brush), but they last much longer and they leave the skin looking nice and dewy.

yes, people have told me that i am too old to still so the piercing-thing...... but a) i have always been a... late-bloomer, i guess. b) now (that i am not underage anymore) i don’t have to get it done in some rando’s basement... (not that i would eeever consider doing something stupid and immature, like that......)  and c) now i can’t get grounded for "body-mutilation" (how my parents used to (probably still do) call it).... so, while in munich i paid my lovely piercer, maike a visit (she apologizes every time for causing you pain. isn't that cute?)... and of course i had to do my make-up to make me feel bad-ass (and less like the wimp i actually am.......)

the look: daytime smokey-eyes and... not really a whole lot more

skin: where needed, i used light foundation and powder on the entire face for a matt finish. pinkish matt blush on the hollows of my cheeks.

brows: since most of the face is left quite pure i did a strong-brow. it also always make me feel more bad-ass (silly... i know..... but whatever works. right?)


eyes: i started with a matt medium grey and painted it generously over both lids. on the moveable lid i added black eye shadow and made sure to place it close to the lashes (because i won't be using eyeliner). the last layer was a loose pigment in a silvery-purple (love this color because i it is a cool color without being too dramatic. aaand the subtle purple makes my eyes look more green). staring on the centre of my lid i blended it outward and also added it along the lower lashes. to keep this a daytime-look, i abstained from eye liner, but wasn’t to stingy with mascara....
lips: using my finger, i dabbed a good amount of balm on my lips.
