before getting my buzzcut back in vietnam.... and after spending a good amount of time on an island(where the sun and salt water pretty much took care of my bright red locks)..... i found myself having more and more bad-hair-days (despite the fact that i was, at that point, still traveling with my two favorite hair-products.... that i raved about here and here).
anyway... these bad-as turban-wearers inspired me to some turban-creations of my own that i will (of course) be sharing with you sooooon.
i have told you before about my girl-crushes / muses..... there are ones that i have short affairs with and some that will always inspire me and motivate me to boost my fabulous-ness.
one of them is michelle violy harper. if you know who i am talking about you might have recognized her influence on my make-up looks, from time to time. for everyone else.... here is a shreen-shot from a little instagram-conversation i had with here a whiiiile ago (that i was totally shiiiiiitting myself over, by there way)
anyway, why am i telling you about this, now? i was just on garance dores blog, and her last post is a beauty minute with michelle..... where she says:
"the most important things for beauty, aside from products is your happiness because that is what shows in your face. you can use as many products and as much makeup, but if you’re a miserable person, nothing is going to work. the other thing is stress......"
and not i love michelle even more! because, that's exactly what i believe with all my "smile!" and "have fun!" stuff......
you know how people say that being in love inspires and makes you glow and all that? well i agree. because i have a new love and it's making me freakin excited and energized. i am talking about my newest girl-crush.....
i have been crushing ondebbie harry and reeeeally hard on charlotte carey (can't believe i haven't told you about her before....) for a while now. so that's kind of how this look came about that i have been rocking lately.....
this week i found someone new to add to my bad-ass-beauties lineup..... buuuuuut for the purpose of suspence aaaand so i can have some more time to stalk her.... i will have to introduce her to you later.
and just incase you were wondering.... i am wearing marc jacobs sunglasses, an old army jacket (that my mom hates) ans my make-up was basically this. my hair is a mix of yoga-sweat (don't judge, i looove my post workout hair) and baxter of California, caly pomade.
the other day my dear friend anna texted me. she told me about how she died her hair blond and now she doesn't think the make-up she was doing before looks good anymore. yes, of course, changing your hair color will change your whole look... and that's the fun part right?
well it has been a while since i was blond (currently i am still some version of red....) but if you also happen to be a new-blond (like anna...) and want to change your make-up accordingly.... i will post some different make-up looks to inspire you. just try out different things.... i don't like following or giving general rules. everyone is different and actually it is aaaall about having fun and what you feeeeel best/prettiest/hottest/most bad-ass with.
so, to get us in the blooonde-mood... here are some (of my favorite) pics of the uuuultimate-blone... marilyn (one of my always-and-forever loves)
and remember..... a smile is the prettiest thing you can wear.
eyes: with a blending brush (the most underrated brush, i might add) i applied a matt medium brown to my upper lid. this brush makes it so easy to intensify the color in the crease to create super easy sculpting. starting at the inner edge of my eyes i drew gold with an eye liner pencil, along the top lashes. again staring at the inner crease i drew silver over my tear duct. the waterlines got some lovin' too... with a black kohl kajal. when i coated my lashes with mascara i made sure to not neglect the little hairs in the inner and outer corners.
for the evening this look got an update….. apart from refreshing my foundation and blush i added… a hair accessory (… a la joan)… a second coat of mascara… and lipstick inmedia
and then i went to dance my butt off ……somewhere in brooklyn.
if you follow my pinterest board, bad-ass... beauty you might have noticed that one of my never-ending-girl-crushes is angeline jolie. she is (in my eyes (well, anything on this blog of mine is "in my eyes" i guess…)) so drop-dead-gordgeous…. and so bad-ass.
i think one of the (few) reasons i like her so much, is the role she played in the movie playing by heart (from 1998). her character, joan, has been an inspiration, since the first time i watched this movie. (it was my favorite movie for a while… watched it almost every day for a while. i would say about junior year of high school... which lead to me being able to (to this day) recite pretty much every line…)
anyway, she is…… hard to describe. any kind of generic word that is coming to my mind right now doesn't quite do her justice…. i guess you just have to see it for yourself. i caaan tell you that she is a hopeless-romantic… all about finding/believing in love and stuff (which is not exactly how i (or anyone who knows me) would describe myself. and not generally a quality i long to have….). but i love her for her for being a…. character ….her crazy outfits and some ridiculous (in the most positive sense of the word) monologues, that i have definitely quoted when the occasion arose.
to give you some examples:
"i don't know… he might be right. but it ain't going to stop me from trying"
"the least i can do, for taking your last quarter, is letting you buy me a drink" (don't use this one (anymore), though. 'cus i don't let men buy me drinks. incase you were wondering…)
"why don't you do the world a big fat fucking favor and crawl back into your mothers womb."(a little hostile, i admit, but… come one… a goooood quote, that haaas come in handy… not gonna lie)
having said that… she is my muse (for now). starting with the red hair….
so, have fun and check out playing by heart.
i would love to hear if a movie character has inspired you, and how.
i was contemplating not mentioning the muse who inspired this look.... but y not? y not tell you that i totally watch the real housewives of atlanta? watching this show has the same effect on me as watching rupaul's drag race ....it makes me think to myself: "now that(!) is a lot of make-up......". i also think cynthia is a beautiful woman (especially in her reunion-look.... damn!) and one of her make-up looks in the new season inspired todays make-up. you can find inspiration anywhere... aaaanywhere…
shin: foundation, powder and natural blush for flawless matt skin ...without any crazy sculpting (like cynthia actually would...)
brows: i filled them in and enhanced them a bit, without creating hard lines, since this look already has enough going on with the eyes and lips...
eyes: the first layer of my eye shadow ismac's parfait amour. on the center
of the movable lid i dabbed a silver loose-powder with my fingers, before
rimming my eyes with sephora's shimmering violet eye shadow pen. the finishing
touches were silver highlights on the inner corners, with a (random drugstore) eyeliner ...and (of course) mascara.
lips: this is the first time using my new bite beauty, high pigment pencil in bramble. i bought it because it has this perfect deep cherry color and a nice... juicy finish. in fact this is my first product frombite beauty. i was happy
to hear that it is the most natural/organic line sephora carries. and i like that
the pen has the screw mecanism and won't need to be sharpened. unfortunately, i wasn't too impressed with the lip-life
(shelf-life on the lipes. get it?), but that is the price you pay for that
beautifully-hydrated look. like when using a lipstick, i had to prep my lips with foundation,
powder and lip liner (i used mac's vino), to keep the color from creasing at the
edge.
have fun with finding inspiration in unconventional places!
last week i got my nail did. and when i say "did", i mean "diiiiid".
i have always wanted long nails. an when i say "long", i mean "looooong-aaass nails"... ever since foxy brown in hot spot. man, i loved that video…. and her (ask my sis). in hindsight i would say it was a girls-crush. and watching it agin, just now, i gotta say… still love it.
anyway, i realize i am not the first person to get fake nails (even though it is totally exciting for me…… never thought i would actually have fake nails….. and as we know, i usually don't even get a pedi) but it brought me to talk to you, about hand care, and how hard it is to maintain nice hands and nails in the winter. i am really lazy with putting on hand cream, so i need one that is really good and effective.
the one and only hand cream you will ever need is by dr. hauschka. i am not referring it because it is all natural… and they have "a mission"… or because it is exclusive… and expensive. but because it immediately goes in your skin, and leaves it sooo much smoother (not just for half an hour). and most of all, it doesn't leave a greasy layer on your hands, that you feel every time you wash them. i hate that….
the look: green eye shadow and red lips… still inspired by michelle violy harper(still working on her perfect complexion and those cheekbones… man… those cheekbones……)
skin: because of the dry winter air i am keeping my skin routine quite basic… just with tinted moisturizer and a little bit of powder under my eyes and over my bottom lashes to make them… disappear. when i use red lipstick i like using my very-bright-red blush... mac, powder blush, frankly scarlet.
brows: dark brown and balck eye shadow with brow gel
eyes: for a clean base i start with cream colored shadow from my cease to my brows and define the crease with a shimmery light pink. the green i used on the movable lid was mac, eye shadow, juxt. it is a good not-too-in-your-face-shimmery lime. i didn't want to use black eye liner…… so i took a dark bordeaux lip liner and plum colored eye shadow and drew them along the roots of my top lashes. the bottom lid stayed completely free from shadow and mascara.
lips: i only used this suuuuper fantastic liquid lipstick in fiery, by stila... that i already raved about here.
my three favorite muses and their signature lipsticks….. inspired these looks.
the lipstick-lady:catherine baba… if i can, one day, manage to just be half as fabulous as her... her look: dirty-red matt lips with glamorous eyes
i used revlon, just bitten, lipstain + balm in forbidden with mac, lip pencil in beet
the lipstick-lady:michelle violy harper… so incredibly gorgeous and reminds me to just have fun with make-up (and fashion). her look: pale white skin with minimal eyes, paired strong brows and lips
i used... lipstick in media and lip pencil in vino, both from mac
the lipstick-lady:marilyn monroe… my all-time favorite her look: the classic 50s bombshell... cat-eye and red lips
i used... dior, rouge dior in ara red and mac, lip pencil in beet
yes i am doing it... this is a halloween post. but it's my first halloween in the states and i looove dressing up! i think i everyone should dress up more often.
yodeling in the alps...
ok. granted, me dressing up as a german is not really dressing up. but i just wanted to wear my dirndl (the traditional bavarian dress) again. and this was just my costume for the office...
the make-up: soft and feminine
party on!...
i have been looking forward to dress up as wayne campbell for months! wayne's world is one of the movies that my sis and i can recite entirely from heart. and that iiiis what happened as soon as i parted my hair down the middle and put that hat on....
the make-up: basically... none. i mean, i'm a dude, right?
absinthe ferry...
this one was totally spontaneous.... i wanted to do a costume where i could play with make-up and sparkles. (they are an instant-happy-maker!) taking my la fée verte look to the next level... with kylie minogue in moulin rouge as the inspiration.
the make-up: gold… glitter... green sparkles... red lips and lashes (yup, i put red lip gloss on my lashes. because the only red contacts i found were a huuundred dollars. no joke….)
aaaand glow-in-the dark paint (the best thing eeeever!)
have fun…. and dress up! …even if it is not halloween
the look: matt skin, green-gold eyes and nude lips
skin: foundation blended from the centre of my face to towards the outside. i then matted my face with a good amount of powder, using a big brush. i placed a frosted, light-pink blush just under my cheekbones.
brown: i painted my brows in a way that they would be big, but not hard.
eyes: the golden base, for this look, i created by using bare escentuals, bare minerals, eye color in in the buff. it is the perfect mix of nude-beige and gold. all along the lashes, and on the outer half of the crease, i brushed a green eye shadow, that also had a slight shimmer to it. i rimed the eyes, all around the waterline, with a deep black kohl eye liner. mascara coating the lashes, making sure to get the roots.
lips: i used a thick lip balm and dabbed it on, with my finger, before using mac, pro longwear, lip pencil in etcetera. (only) drawing it on the upper lip and the centre of the bottom lip.
